This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application. The Surgical Quality Nurse will be responsible for the following duties but not limited to:
Being competent and confident in managing the surgery program and intra-operative documentation. Being competent and confident in reviewing/analyzing the DSS Live Data Analytics and PeriOp Planner. Validating/verifying specific data points on all surgical cases entered into the Vista Surgery program, i.e. those items that transfer to the NSO, CPRS, coders, billing etc. Ensuring close-out and transmission of all VASQIP assessed cases to NSO. Maintaining and updating the VASQIP Database, maintaining patient record confidentiality. Maintaining and updating the OR monthly caseload statistics and distributing to Surgical Workgroup. Verifying/validating data from respective surgeon/anesthesiologist to minimize discrepancies and ensure correct information (i.e. wound classification, ASA scores, anesthesia techniques etc. are entered correctly into the Vista surgical program and uploaded to the NSO. Collaborating with surgical schedulers, OR nurses and OR manager to ensure updating of information in the Vista surgical program (i.e. cancellations, discharge times, surgical specialties, removal of aborted or cancelled cases, patient safety data information. Collaborating with CPT coders to ensure accurate and timely coding of surgical cases necessary for review. Updating the VISN Lead Surgical Nurse and NSO of CPT coding discrepancies found in VISTA and the CPT look-up program. Ensuring actions are taken to correct VASQIP data discrepancies from NSO Status Reports and updates given to the Chief of Surgery. Ensuring NSO Quarterly Facility Reports are reviewed, analyzed, and presented to the Chief of Surgery and Surgical Workgroup, regardless of the specific department to which he/she organizationally reports (e.g., Surgery, Quality Management, or Nursing). Providing ongoing educational activities regarding VASQIP to relevant personnel at the VHA facility. Facilitating and coordinating Surgical M&M by collaborating with attendings and residents, preparing minutes, providing CME codes and other necessary functions for smooth presentations. Collaborating with the Chief of Surgery in carrying out several functions involving surgical improvement activities that are integral and transects both VASQIP and M&M programs. Ensuring that identified occurrences for VASQIP cases from M&M reviews that occur after NSO deadlines are manually transmitted to the NSO before quarterly deadlines, to minimize discrepancies in the rolling 12-month reports, as needed. Participating in the VISN 1 Surgical Quality Nurses' (SQN) meetings/teleconferences, VISN 1 Surgical Workgroup meetings/teleconferences, Surgical Workgroup meetings, Operative and Invasive Procedures Committee (facilitate/coordinate), Infection Prevention Committee and other meetings as warranted. Preparing quarterly and ad hoc reports as requested by Surgical Chief of Service, Surgical Chiefs of Section, Infectious Disease, VISN 1 SQNs, VISN 1 Surgical Workgroup, Facility Surgical Workgroup, and ancillary departments. Successfully completing the TMS module "NSO Onboarding Surgical Quality Nurse Competency Exam" at ~ 6 months in the SQN role. Maintaining annual Surgical Quality Nurse Competency through the annual TMS exam.
Work Schedule: Weekdays, from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm.

Basic Requirements United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. Education Requirement : Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency AND accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN ) OR The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE ). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. Licensure/Registration Requirement : Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade: Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse III - A Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience.
