Job Description:
To perform diagnostic medical ultrasound examinations as
requested by referring physicians for in house or out patients. To
create a therapeutic environment for pediatric, adolescent, adult
and older adult patients and their families. To carry out functions
in a manner consistent with total quality
care.*Qualifications*\***PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
\*Under the general direction of the Director of Imaging Services
and the direct supervision of the Sonography Supervisor, within
established company and departmental policies and procedures, the
incumbent performs the following essential functions:* Prepare
patients for examinations and explain procedures to patients while
performing studies. Reassure the patient at all times and be
sensitive to the comfort and needs of the patients.* Correlation of
the clinical history with the test to be performed.* Consultation
with the referring physician regarding patient's previous history
and decision of appropriate ultrasound procedure required when
necessary.* Perform ultrasound studies: abdominal, obstetrical,
gynecological, neurological and vascular according to established
guidelines (ACR).* Operate complex ultrasound imaging equipment
pertinent to department, Dexa, Mammographic, CAD computer assisted*
Utilize ancillary devices, laser camera, VAC assist BX, to obtain
permanent record of examinations.* Select proper transducer and
frequency for performance of examination.* Recognize the
significance of all structures that are visualized at all times, to
differentiate artifacts from normal or pathological processes.*
Recognize electronic equipment limitations.* Must be able to
determine if the anatomy is normal or abnormal and if deemed
abnormal, to be able to delineate the abnormality and to extend the
scope of the study appropriately.* Ability to deviate from normal
technique when necessary and to develop better techniques to keep
the department up to date.* Provide technical and nursing aid for
surgical biopsy aspiration procedures.* Participate in reading
session with physician and contribute technical and professional
knowledge to the final diagnostic impression or report.* Continuous
review of anatomy and physiology and the effect of disease
processes with relation to ultrasound.* Assist in Quality Assurance
reviews.* Maximize use of the Radiology Information System,
utilizing computers, terminals, and other office equipment for
efficient performance.* Maintain order and cleanliness of equipment
and ultrasound area.* Review of pathology, surgical and follow up
with referring physicians to correlate patients' progress and
provide means of reviewing accuracy of ultrasound examination.*
Evaluate new products and equipment for possible future use.*
Research, develop and formulate new techniques for ultrasound
procedures.* Assist in training of new Sonographers and at times,
direct orientation of new techniques, research projects, and
in-service education of other medical staff members. Provide
demonstrations of ultrasound equipment for staff and visitors.*
Instruct student Sonographers in patient evaluation and ultrasound
examination technique.* Assist in providing training in Diagnostic
Ultrasound for Radiologic Technology students, and Radiologic
Technologists* Performs similar or related duties as assigned or
requested.*KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES*Individuals must possess

job:* Ability to deliver patient care in a manner that is
appropriate to the demographics and/ or specific needs of the
patient population served by the hospital.* Demonstrates
proficiency in assessing, responding and adapting treatment of care
to meet the needs of the patient population served by the
hospital.* Physical requirements include reaching, standing for
long periods, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting and fingering such
as in typing. Other physical requirements are grasping, talking
clearly, accurately and sometimes loudly and quickly. Hearing
through oral communication, and some repetitive motions.* Knowledge
of the diagnostic ultrasound field must be up to date and ongoing.*
Familiarity with new and upcoming advancements in the ultrasound
field.* Skills such as reading, comprehension and communication
with the spoken word.* Knowledge of safe patient transport
practices.* Knowledge of department and hospital confidentiality
policies pertinent to patient information and hospital data.*
Ability to exchange ideas and receive detailed information.*
Ability to follow directions.* Ability to work with other members
of the Health Care Team, including nurses, physicians, etc., and to
provide the best in comfort, caring and curing.* Ability to exert
up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and up to 20 pounds of force
frequently.* Ability to wear the following safety equipment: safety
glasses, gloves and surgical mask.* Ability to receive training and
guidelines from supervisor on non-routine duties which may not
follow standard practices and procedures. Determines action to be
taken, handling all but unusual cases.*OSHA RATING: * Category I
(Exposure to blood borne pathogens)*ACCESS TO PHI: * Complete*WORK
SCHEDULE: ** Generally Monday through Friday, day
shift.*QUALIFICATIONS: *Education:* Registry or Certification from
accredited two year Allied Health Program or two years of college
with emphasis on the Biological sciences.* Satisfactory completion
of formal Ultrasound training program or equivalent
experience.Experience:* Previous experience as a Diagnostic Medical
Sonographer is desirable.Licensure/Certification:* Basic Life
Support (BLS) certification required.* Registered or Registry
Eligible, American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers
(ARDMS).* Must renew certification and/or registration annually
with 30 hours of continuing education bi-annually.* Licensed in the
State of New Hampshire with the Board of Medical Imaging& Radiation
Therapy.Standard of Business ConductIndividuals are required to
