Perform a variety of routine, quality control, and specialized pathology laboratory tasks. Assist in the handling and preparation of a variety of pathology specimens for Pathologist and/or Cytotechnologist. Provide processing of specimens for the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease. Assist Pathologist with the staining and accessioning of frozen sections. In addition to Pathology laboratory tasks, this position must assist with registering patients, accessioning histology and cytology specimens, as well as providing administrative support to the Pathology laboratory. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the direct supervision of the Pathology Supervisor, in accordance with department policies and procedures established by Catholic Medical Center, performs the following functions: Essential Functions: Histology:

• Assist Histology technical personnel in preparing, cleaning and maintaining equipment and supplies as necessary.
• Maintain the histology staining area, to include weekly stain dish set-up and cleaning, and filtering stains as required by histology technical personnel.
• File and retrieve slides and blocks in/from storage, to include surgical and touch prep slides and surgical/autopsy blocks.
• Receive and store ordered supplies for the Histology section.
• Discard completed specimens at designated times as identified by the laboratory Retention Guidelines.
• Maintain surgical pathology specimen storage area.
• Ensure safe and prompt disposal of tissues and fixative (biohazard).
• Respond to phone calls into the histology section, answering the telephone courteously and relaying accurate messages in a timely manner.
• Perform and document Quality Control procedures, as directed, including staining and processing equipment maintenance, statistics, small tissue grossing logs, and temperatures and other items as needed.
• As requested, process and document chemical exposure monitoring devices. Notify Pathology Supervisor and/or Laboratory Safety Officer immediately when acceptable limits are exceeded.
• Provide training/orientation for new personnel as assigned. Essential Functions: Frozen Sections (Intraoperative Procedures)
  • Assist the Pathologist with frozen section procedures (as necessary) to include: specimen accessioning, proper labeling of all cassettes and slides used for the procedure, staining of prepared slides according to protocol. Assemble all specimens, requisitions and places in the appropriate holding area.
  • Clean and disinfect all working areas in the frozen section room and cryostats after each frozen section procedure.
  • Ensure proper stocks of materials are maintained within the frozen section room.
  • Monitor equipment, correct problems and call for assistance as required. Essential Functions: Cytology:
    • Receive Cytology specimens delivered into the Pathology department. Record patient data into the Laboratory Information System as required.
    • Receive and processes conventional and liquid based cytology GYN specimens using automated and manual procedures.
    • Prepare, clean and maintain cytology processing equipment and supplies as necessary.
    • Prepare non-GYN cytology specimens (urine, sputum, body fluids, fine needle aspirates) for staining.
    • Perform staining procedures for cytology slide specimens using manual and automated staining equipment.
    • Maintain the staining area, to include weekly stain dish set-up and cleaning, and filtering stains as required.
    • File and retrieve slides and blocks in/from storage, to include surgical, GYN and Non-GYN slides and surgical blocks as required.
    • Discard completed specimens at designated times as identified by the laboratory Retention Guidelines.
    • Respond to phone calls into the cytology section, answering the telephone courteously and relaying accurate messages in a timely manner.
    • Perform and document Quality Control procedures, as directed, including staining and processing equipment maintenance, statistics, and temperatures and other items as needed.

    • Provide training/orientation for new personnel as assigned. Education:
      • High School diploma. Associates degree or equivalent desirable
      • Minimum of 24 semester hours of college level science credits required to perform high complexity testing.
      • Knowledge of Human Anatomy required.
      • Completion of the American Society for Cytotechnology (ASCT) Non-GYN Specimen Processing course is desirable Experience:
        • Experience in medical environment preferred
        • Previous experience in an anatomic pathology laboratory is preferred License/Certifications:
