ORGANIZATION: Mount Auburn Cemetery comprises 175 acres and is situated in Watertown and Cambridge near Boston, Massachusetts. Founded in 1831, and now visited by over 200,000 people each year, Mount Auburn is a National Historic Landmark, recognized as the first “rural cemetery” and the inspiration for the American Parks Movement during the 19th century. As an active cemetery, Mount Auburn inspires all who visit, comforts the bereaved, and commemorates the dead in a landscape of exceptional beauty. As an accredited arboretum, Mount Auburn features 5,000 trees and more than 20,000 plants/plant masses overall. DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Perform grass trimming/mowing throughout the cemetery, as well as assisting in lawn renovation and fertilization as directed by supervisor Operate riding mower, walk-behind mower, push mower, string trimmer, backpack blower, edger, any other related equipment for turf care, being mindful of obstacles such as monuments, corner posts, signposts, trees and shrubs Operate backpack leaf blower and leaf vacuum during leaf mulching/pickup season Perform various ground maintenance tasks such as weeding, mulching, grading, seeding and watering. Remove litter, branches, and unsightly floral tributes as needed. Expected to participate in snow removal. May be required to perform tasks across all departments as directed by supervisor. Follow all Cemetery safety policies and procedures related to assigned tasks, including wearing personal protective equipment (eye and hearing protecting, gloves, etc.), proper handling of chemicals, ladder safety, and lifting and moving heavy objects. Bring unsafe conditions to the attention of the Grass/Grounds Maintenance Supervisor and make suggestions to improve safe working practices. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: One year of experience operating riding mower, string trimmer, and self-propelled walk-behind mowing equipment. A valid driver’s license is required. REQUIRED PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Use equipment including but not limited to lawn mowing machines, string trimmers, leaf blowers, leaf vacuum, snow blowers, rakes and shovels Shovel mulch and soil, and lift fertilizer, lime and soil mix up to 50 pounds Positions self to bend, traverse and/or be in a stationary position for long periods of time Work in dusty conditions during mowing and leaf mulching operations Work outdoors, including harsh weather conditions.
